So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing that his father had given him. Esau said to himself, “The time to mourn for my father is near. Then I’ll kill my brother Jacob.”

When the messengers came back to Jacob, they said, “We went to your brother Esau. He is coming to meet you with 400 men.”

I am for peace, but when I talk about it, they only talk about war.

This is what the Lord says: Because Edom has committed three crimes, and now a fourth crime, I will not change my plans. The Edomites pursued their relatives with swords. They refused to show any compassion to them. Their anger was unstoppable. They refused to control their fury.

But the Edomites answered, “You may not pass through our country. If you try, we’ll come out and attack you.”

Since the Edomites refused to let Israel go through their territory, the Israelites turned around and went a different way.

The people of Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom. They said, ‘Please let us go through your country.’ But the king of Edom wouldn’t listen to them. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab. But he wouldn’t allow it, either. So the people of Israel remained at Kadesh.

But Sihon did not trust the Israelites enough to let them go through his territory. Sihon assembled all his troops. He camped at Jahaz and attacked Israel.
