Our ancestors went to Egypt, and we lived there for many years. The Egyptians mistreated us and our ancestors.

God said to Abram, “You can know for sure that your descendants will live in a land that is not their own, where they will be slaves, and they will be oppressed for 400 years.

They also took their livestock and the possessions they had accumulated in Canaan. Jacob and all his family arrived in Egypt.

He had brought his sons, his grandsons, his daughters, and his granddaughters—his entire family.

On the seventh day the child died. But David’s officials were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. They thought, “While the child was alive, we talked to him, and he wouldn’t listen to us. How can we tell him the child is dead? He may harm ⌞himself⌟.”

“When you help the Hebrew women in childbirth, look at the child when you deliver it. If it’s a boy, kill it, but if it’s a girl, let it live.”

Then Pharaoh commanded all his people to throw into the Nile every ⌞Hebrew⌟ boy that was born, but to let every girl live.

The Israelites had been living in Egypt for 430 years.

Pharaoh’s slave drivers had placed Israelite foremen in charge of the people. The slave drivers beat the foremen and said, “You didn’t finish all the bricks you were ordered to make yesterday or today. Why didn’t you make as many as you used to?”

Remember all the free fish we ate in Egypt and the cucumbers, watermelons, leeks, onions, and garlic we had?

Isn’t it enough that you brought us out of a land flowing with milk and honey only to kill us in the desert? Do you also have to order us around?

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. He said, “This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the hardships we’ve had.

When we cried out to the Lord, he heard us, sent a messenger, and brought us out of Egypt. “Now we’re here in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your territory.

So Jacob went to Egypt, and he and our ancestors died there.

This king was shrewd in the way he took advantage of our people. He mistreated our ancestors. He made them abandon their newborn babies outdoors, where they would die.

So the Egyptians treated us cruelly, oppressed us, and made us do back-breaking work for them.
