So tell them, ‘As I live, declares the Lord, I solemnly swear I will do everything to you that you said I would do.

His eyes should see his own ruin. He should drink from the wrath of the Almighty.

Raising his hand, he swore that he would kill them in the wilderness,

That is why I angrily took this solemn oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest!’ ”

I, the Lord, will speak. Everything that I say will happen without any more delay. I will say something, and it will happen during your lifetime, you rebellious people, declares the Almighty Lord.’ ”

The people began complaining out loud to the Lord about their troubles. When the Lord heard them, he became angry, and fire from the Lord began to burn among them. It destroyed some people on the outskirts of the camp.

They complained to Moses and Aaron, “If only we had died in Egypt or this desert!

But as I live and as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth, I solemnly swear that

None of those who treat me with contempt will see it!

When Moses told these things to all the Israelites, the people mourned bitterly, as if someone had died.

‘None of the people 20 years old or older, who came from Egypt, will see the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob with an oath. This is because they didn’t wholeheartedly follow me.’

When the Lord heard what you said, he was angry and took this oath:

“Not one of these evil people will ever see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,

Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered River. During that time all our soldiers from that generation died, as the Lord had sworn they would.

In fact, it was the Lord himself who got rid of all of them until none were left in the camp.

I raise my hand toward heaven and solemnly swear: As surely as I live forever,

With whom was God angry for 40 years? He was angry with those who sinned and died in the desert.
