none of the people who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I did in Egypt and in the desert will see the land which I promised their ancestors. They have tested me now ten times and refused to obey me.

I’ve been with your household 20 years now. I worked for you 14 years for your two daughters and 6 years for your flocks, and you changed my wages 10 times.

Your father has cheated me. He has changed my wages 10 times. But God hasn’t let him harm me.

You have insulted me ten times now. You’re not even ashamed of mistreating me.

They had an unreasonable desire ⌞for food⌟ in the wilderness. In the desert they tested God.

Raising his hand, he swore that he would kill them in the wilderness,

Again and again they tested God, and they pushed the Holy One of Israel to the limit.

They said to Moses, “Did you bring us out into the desert to die because there were no graves in Egypt? Look what you’ve done by bringing us out of Egypt!

The people complained about Moses by asking, “What are we supposed to drink?”

In the desert the whole community complained about Moses and Aaron.

So they complained to Moses by saying, “Give us water to drink!” Moses said to them, “Why are you complaining to me? Why are you testing the Lord?”

But the people were thirsty for water there. They complained to Moses and asked, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Was it to make us, our children, and our livestock die of thirst?”

He named that place Massah [Testing] and Meribah [Complaining] because the Israelites complained and because they tested the Lord, asking, “Is the Lord with us or not?”

When the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. They said to him, “We don’t know what has happened to this Moses, who led us out of Egypt. Make gods who will lead us.”

So they said, “May the Lord see what you have done and judge you! You have made Pharaoh and his officials hate us. You have given them an excuse to kill us.”

You have seen much, but you do not observe anything. Your ears are open, but you hear nothing.

Whenever the king asked them about things that required wisdom and insight, he found that they knew ten times more than all the magicians and psychics in his whole kingdom.

So now we call arrogant people blessed. Not only are evildoers encouraged, they even test God and get away with it.’ ”

The people began complaining out loud to the Lord about their troubles. When the Lord heard them, he became angry, and fire from the Lord began to burn among them. It destroyed some people on the outskirts of the camp.

Some foreigners among the Israelites had a strong craving for ⌞other kinds of⌟ food. Even the Israelites started crying again and said, “If only we had meat to eat!

Miriam and Aaron began to criticize Moses because he was married to a woman from Sudan.

The Lord said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to trust me in spite of all the miraculous signs I have done among them?

They complained to Moses and Aaron, “If only we had died in Egypt or this desert!

Only Caleb (son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite) and Joshua (son of Nun) will get to see the land. This is because they wholeheartedly followed the Lord.

Jesus said to him, “Again, Scripture says, ‘Never tempt the Lord your God.’ ”

Yet, God was not pleased with most of them, so their dead bodies were scattered over the desert.

We shouldn’t put the Lord  to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.

Never forget how you made the Lord your God angry in the desert. You’ve rebelled against the Lord from the day you left Egypt until you came here.

That is where your ancestors tested me,
