Numbers 11:18

God's Word

Tell the people to get ready for tomorrow. They must be set apart as holy. Then they will eat meat. I, the Lord, heard them crying and saying, ‘If only we had meat to eat! We were better off in Egypt!’ So I will give them meat.

So Jacob said to his family and those who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods which you have, wash yourselves until you are ritually clean, and change your clothes.

Though he savors it and won’t let go of it and he holds it on the roof of his mouth,

Let that misery fill his belly. ⌞God⌟ throws his burning anger at the godless person and makes his wrath come down on him like rain.

True, he did strike a rock, and water did gush out, and the streams did overflow. But can he also give us bread or provide us, his people, with meat?”

Moses also said, “The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and all the food you want in the morning. The Lord has heard you complaining about him. Who are we? You’re not complaining about us but about the Lord.”

So the Lord said to Moses, “Go to the people, and tell them they have two days to get ready. They must set themselves apart as holy. Have them wash their clothes

Then Moses said to the people, “Be ready two days from now. Don’t disqualify yourselves by having sexual intercourse.”

Even the priests who are allowed to come near the Lord must set themselves apart as holy, or the Lord will violently kill them.”

The people began complaining out loud to the Lord about their troubles. When the Lord heard them, he became angry, and fire from the Lord began to burn among them. It destroyed some people on the outskirts of the camp.

They won’t eat it just for one or two days, or five, or ten, or twenty days,

but our ancestors were not willing to obey him. Instead, they pushed him aside, and in their hearts they turned back to Egypt.

“Get up! Tell the people, ‘Get ready for tomorrow by performing the ceremonies to make yourselves holy. This is what the Lord God of Israel says: You have what I claimed for myself, Israel. You will not be able to defend yourselves against your enemies until you get rid of what I have claimed.

The people went to Bethel and sat there in the presence of God until evening. They cried very loudly,
