The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your land, your relatives, and your father’s home. Go to the land that I will show you.

Now you have left for your father’s home because you were so homesick. But why did you steal my gods?”

Listen, daughter! Look closely! Turn your ear ⌞toward me⌟. Forget your people, and forget your father’s house.

Moses sent his father-in-law on his way. So Jethro went back to his own country.

“What do you think about this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘Son, go to work in the vineyard today.’

“His son replied, ‘I don’t want to!’ But later he changed his mind and went.

“If people come to me and are not ready to abandon their fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as their own lives, they cannot be my disciples.

So from now on we don’t think of anyone from a human point of view. If we did think of Christ from a human point of view, we don’t anymore.

All these people died having faith. They didn’t receive the things that God had promised them, but they saw these things coming in the distant future and rejoiced. They acknowledged that they were living as strangers with no permanent home on earth.

Faith led Abraham to obey when God called him to go to a place that he would receive as an inheritance. Abraham left his own country without knowing where he was going.

The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went with the people of Judah from the City of Palms into the desert of Judah. There they lived with the people of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
