Nehemiah 9:19

But because of your endless compassion, you didn’t abandon them in the desert. The column of smoke didn’t leave them during the day, but it led them on their way. The column of fire didn’t leave them during the night, but it gave them light to see the way they should go.

You led them during the day by a column of smoke and during the night by a column of fire to give them light to see the way they should go.

You handed them over to their enemies, who made them suffer. When they began to suffer, they cried to you. You heard them from heaven. You gave them saviors to rescue them from their enemies because of your endless compassion.

But your compassion is endless. You didn’t destroy them or abandon them. You are a merciful and compassionate God.

He remembered his promise  to them. In keeping with his rich mercy, he changed his plans.

Give thanks to the one who led his people through the desert— because his mercy endures forever.

In all their travels, whenever the ⌞column of⌟ smoke moved from the tent, the Israelites would break camp.

So the Lord’s column stayed over the tent during the day, and there was fire in the smoke at night. In this way all the Israelites could see the column throughout their travels.

Remember these things, Jacob: You are my servant, Israel. I formed you; you are my servant. Israel, I will not forget you.

the Lord’s mercy. We were not completely wiped out. His compassion is never limited.

But I acted so that my name would not be dishonored among the nations who had watched me bring the Israelites out ⌞of Egypt⌟.

But I had compassion on them. I didn’t destroy them or completely wipe them out in the desert.

But I didn’t use my power so that my name would not be dishonored among the nations who had watched me bring the Israelites out ⌞of Egypt⌟.

Open your ears and listen, my God. Open your eyes and look at our ruins and at the city called by your name. We are not requesting this from you because we are righteous, but because you are very compassionate.

“But you, Lord our God, are compassionate and forgiving, although we have rebelled against you.

“I, the Lord, never change. That is why you descendants of Jacob haven’t been destroyed yet.

What if the Egyptians tell the people who live in this land? Lord, they have already heard that you are with these people, that they have seen you with their own eyes, that your column of smoke stays over them, and that you go ahead of them in a column of smoke by day and in a column of fire by night.

Remember that for 40 years the Lord your God led you on your journey in the desert. He did this in order to humble you and test you. He wanted to know whether or not you would wholeheartedly obey his commands.

For the sake of his great name, the Lord will not abandon his people, because the Lord wants to make you his people.
