When Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite servant, and Geshem the Arab heard about this, they made fun of us and ridiculed us. They asked, “What are you doing? Are you going to rebel against the king?”

Even one of Joiada’s sons was a son-in-law of Sanballat from Beth Horon. (Joiada was the son of the chief priest Eliashib.) I chased Joiada’s son away from me.

But when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard this, they were very upset that someone had come to give the people of Israel so much assistance.

When Sanballat heard we were rebuilding the wall, he became enraged and made fun of the Jews.

In it was written: It has been reported throughout the nations, and Geshem has confirmed it, that you and the Jews are planning to rebel. That’s why you’re rebuilding the wall. According to this report, you want to become their king.

They were all trying to intimidate us. They thought we would give up and not finish the work. But God made me strong.

“But now those who are younger than I am laugh at me. I didn’t think their fathers were fit to sit with the dogs of my flock.

We have suffered more than our share of ridicule from those who are carefree. We have suffered more than our share of contempt from those who are arrogant.

We have become a disgrace to our neighbors, an object of ridicule and contempt to those around us.

You made us a source of conflict to our neighbors, and our enemies made fun of us.

O God, commander of armies, restore us and smile on us so that we may be saved.

You give useless advice about getting ready for war. Whom, then, do you trust for support in your rebellion against me?

Each time I speak, I have to cry out and shout, “Violence and destruction!” The Lord’s word has made me the object of insults and contempt all day long.

Then Ishmael took captive the rest of the people who were at Mizpah. He captured the king’s daughters and all the other people who had been left at Mizpah. They were the people whom Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, had put under the control of Gedaliah, son of Ahikam. Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, took them captive and left for Ammon.

He said to them, “Leave! The girl is not dead. She’s sleeping.” But they laughed at him.

They laughed at him. So he made all of them go outside. Then he took the child’s father, mother, and his three disciples and went to the child.

They began to accuse Jesus by saying, “We found that he stirs up trouble among our people: He keeps them from paying taxes to the emperor, and he says that he is Christ, a king.”

When Pilate heard what Jesus said, he wanted to free him. But the Jews shouted, “If you free this man, you’re not a friend of the emperor. Anyone who claims to be a king is defying the emperor.”

We have found this man to be a troublemaker. He starts quarrels among all Jews throughout the world. He’s a ringleader of the Nazarene sect.

Some were made fun of and whipped, and some were chained and put in prison.
