Nehemiah 1:4

God's Word

When I heard this, I sat down and cried. I mourned for days. I continued to fast and pray to the God of heaven.

You had a change of heart and humbled yourself in front of the Lord when you heard my words against this place and those who live here. I had said that those who live here will be destroyed and cursed. You also tore your clothes ⌞in distress⌟ and cried in front of me. So I will listen ⌞to you⌟, declares the Lord.

(Solomon had made a bronze platform 7½ feet long, 7½ feet wide, and 4½ feet high. He put it in the middle of the courtyard. He stood on the platform, knelt in front of the entire assembly, and stretched out his hands toward heaven.)

This is what King Cyrus of Persia says: The Lord God of heaven has given me all the kingdoms of the world. Then he ordered me to build a temple for him in Jerusalem (which is in Judah).

While Ezra was praying, confessing ⌞these sins⌟, crying, and throwing himself down in front of God’s temple, a large crowd of Israelite men, women, and children gathered around him. They also began to cry bitterly.

When I heard this, I tore my clothes ⌞in distress⌟, pulled hair from my scalp and my beard, and sat down in shock.

At the evening sacrifice I got up from my misery, and with my clothes torn, I knelt down, stretched out my hands to the Lord my God in prayer,

“The God of heaven will give us success,” I answered them. “We, his servants, are going to rebuild. You have no property or claim or historic right in Jerusalem.”

“What do you want?” the king asked me. So I prayed to the God of heaven,

The nations will fear the Lord’s name. All the kings of the earth will fear your glory.

Give thanks to the God of heaven because his mercy endures forever.

By the rivers of Babylon, we sat down and cried as we remembered Zion.

During those days I, Daniel, mourned for three whole weeks.

He told them to ask the God of heaven to be merciful and to explain this secret to them so that they would not be destroyed with the rest of the wise advisers in Babylon.

So I turned to the Lord God and looked to him for help. I prayed, pleaded, and fasted in sackcloth and ashes.

Jonah answered them, “I’m a Hebrew. I worship the Lord, the God of heaven. He is the God who made the sea and the land.”

“I will gather those among you who are troubled because of the festivals. They bear a burden of disgrace.

Be happy with those who are happy. Be sad with those who are sad.
