God's Word

Who is a God like you? You forgive sin and overlook the rebellion of your faithful people. You will not be angry forever, because you would rather show mercy.

If you do well, won’t you be accepted? But if you don’t do well, sin is lying outside your door ready to attack. It wants to control you, but you must master it.”

They refused to listen. They forgot the miracles you performed for them. They became stubborn and appointed a leader to take them back to slavery ⌞in Egypt⌟. But you are a forgiving God, one who is compassionate, merciful, patient, and always ready to forgive. You never abandoned them,

As a father has compassion for his children, so the Lord has compassion for those who fear him.

But with you there is forgiveness so that you can be feared.

All my bones will say, “O Lord, who can compare with you? You rescue the weak person from the one who is too strong for him and weak and needy people from the one who robs them.”

Various sins overwhelm me. You are the one who forgives our rebellious acts.

Blessed is the person you choose and invite to live with you in your courtyards. We will be filled with good food from your house, from your holy temple.

Your righteousness reaches to the heavens, O God. You have done great things. O God, who is like you?

But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and merciful God. You are patient, always faithful and ready to forgive.

You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, full of mercy toward everyone who calls out to you.

Who in the skies can compare with the Lord? Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord?

O Lord God of Armies, who is like you? Mighty Lord, even your faithfulness surrounds you.

“Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you? You are glorious because of your holiness and awe-inspiring because of your splendor. You perform miracles.

Then he said, “Lord, please go with us! Even though we are impossible to deal with, forgive our sin and the wrong we have done, and accept us as your own people.”

“Come on now, let’s discuss this!” says the Lord. “Though your sins are bright red, they will become as white as snow. Though they are dark red, they will become as white as wool.

No one who lives ⌞in Zion⌟ will say, “I’m sick.” The sins of its inhabitants will be forgiven.

Now my bitter experience turns into peace. You have saved me and kept me from the rotting pit. You have thrown all my sins behind you.

To whom, then, can you compare God? To what statue can you compare him?

“To whom, then, can you compare me? Who is my equal?” asks the Holy One.

I alone am the one who is going to wipe away your rebellious actions for my own sake. I will not remember your sins ⌞anymore⌟.

I made your rebellious acts disappear like a thick cloud and your sins like the morning mist. Come back to me, because I have reclaimed you.

Let wicked people abandon their ways. Let evil people abandon their thoughts. Let them return to the Lord, and he will show compassion to them. Let them return to our God, because he will freely forgive them.

You’ve tired yourself out with many journeys. You didn’t think that it was hopeless. You’ve found renewed strength, so you didn’t faint.

I will not accuse you forever. I will not be angry with you forever. Otherwise, the spirits, the lives of those I’ve made, would grow faint in my presence.

As a young man marries a woman, so your sons will marry you. As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you.

Don’t be too angry, Lord. Don’t remember our sin forever. Now look, we are all your people.

I will rejoice about Jerusalem and be glad about my people. Screaming and crying will no longer be heard in the city.

Go and proclaim these things to the north: “ ‘Come back, unfaithful Israel. It is the Lord speaking. I will no longer frown on you because I’m merciful,’ declares the Lord. ‘I will no longer be angry with you.

He won’t hold a grudge forever. He won’t always be angry.’ You have said and done all the evil things that you could.”

Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a pleasant child? Even though I have often spoken against him, I still think fondly of him. That is why my heart longs for him, and I will certainly have compassion on him,” declares the Lord.

Ebed Melech left the royal palace and spoke to the king at Benjamin Gate.

In those days and at that time,” declares the Lord, “people will look for Israel’s crimes, but they will find none. They will look for Judah’s sins, but none will be found. I will forgive the faithful few whom I have spared.

If they want to brag, they should brag that they understand and know me. They should brag that I, the Lord, act out of love, righteousness, and justice on the earth. This kind of bragging pleases me, declares the Lord.

None of the sins that he has done will be remembered. He has done what is fair and right. He will certainly live.

“But you, Lord our God, are compassionate and forgiving, although we have rebelled against you.

Return to the Lord, and say these things to him: “Forgive all our sins, and kindly receive us. Then we’ll praise you with our lips.

I will be like dew to the people of Israel. They will blossom like flowers. They will be firmly rooted like cedars from Lebanon.

Then whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Those who escape will be on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. Among the survivors will be those whom the Lord calls, as the Lord has promised.

This is what the Lord says: Because Edom has committed three crimes, and now a fourth crime, I will not change my plans. The Edomites pursued their relatives with swords. They refused to show any compassion to them. Their anger was unstoppable. They refused to control their fury.

He asked me, “What do you see, Amos?” I answered, “A plumb line.” Then the Lord said, “I’m going to hold a plumb line in the middle of my people Israel. I will no longer overlook what they have done.

I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, patient, and always ready to forgive and to reconsider your threats of destruction.

I will surely gather all of you, Jacob. I will surely bring together the few people left in Israel. I will gather them together like sheep in a pen, like a flock in its pasture. They will make a lot of noise because there will be so many people.

I will change those who are lame into a faithful people. I will change those who are forced away into a strong nation.” The Lord will rule them on Mount Zion now and forever.

That is why the Lord will abandon Israel until the time a mother has a child. Then the rest of the Lord’s people will return to the people of Israel.

With your shepherd’s staff, take care of your people, the sheep that belong to you. They live alone in the woods, in fertile pastures. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead like before.

The Lord your God is with you. He is a hero who saves you. He happily rejoices over you, renews you with his love, and celebrates over you with shouts of joy.

He doesn’t want any trouble for the descendants of Jacob. He sees no misfortune for the people of Israel. The Lord their God is with them, praised as their king.

But we have something to celebrate, something to be happy about. This brother of yours was dead but has come back to life. He was lost but has been found.’ ”

Scripture also says that by the authority of Jesus people would be told to turn to God and change the way they think and act so that their sins will be forgiven. This would be told to people from all nations, beginning in the city of Jerusalem.

But what was God’s reply? God said, “I’ve kept 7,000 people for myself who have not knelt to worship Baal.”

“There’s no one like your God, Jeshurun! He rides through the heavens to help you. In majesty he rides through the clouds.

No mercy will be shown to those who show no mercy to others. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Then they got rid of the foreign gods they had and served the Lord. So the Lord could not bear to have Israel suffer any longer.
