So when you give to the poor, don’t announce it with trumpet fanfare. This is what hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets in order to be praised by people. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.

“When you pray, don’t be like hypocrites. They like to stand in synagogues and on street corners to pray so that everyone can see them. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.

“When you fast, stop looking sad like hypocrites. They put on sad faces to make it obvious that they’re fasting. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.

“I don’t accept praise from humans.

Don’t forget to do good things for others and to share what you have with them. These are the kinds of sacrifices that please God.

“Beware of the experts in Moses’ Teachings! They like to walk around in long robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces, to have the front seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at dinners.

Those who speak their own thoughts are looking for their own glory. But the man who wants to bring glory to the one who sent him is a true teacher and doesn’t have dishonest motives.

Whoever speaks must speak God’s words. Whoever serves must serve with the strength God supplies so that in every way God receives glory through Jesus Christ. Glory and power belong to Jesus Christ forever and ever! Amen.

A wicked person borrows, but he does not repay. A righteous person is generous and giving.

Thieves must quit stealing and, instead, they must work hard. They should do something good with their hands so that they’ll have something to share with those in need.

The only thing they asked us to do was to remember the poor, the very thing which I was eager to do.

He stared at the angel and was terrified. Cornelius asked the angel, “What do you want, sir?” The angel answered him, “God is aware of your prayers and your gifts to the poor, and he has remembered you.

“Sound the alarm on the ram’s horn. The enemy swoops down on the Lord’s temple like an eagle. The people of Israel have rejected my promise and rebelled against my teachings.

Tell them to do good, to do a lot of good things, to be generous, and to share.

If it is encouraging others, devote yourself to giving encouragement. If it is sharing, be generous. If it is leadership, lead enthusiastically. If it is helping people in need, help them cheerfully.

After many years I have come back to my people and brought gifts for the poor and offerings ⌞for God⌟.

He said to me, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and has remembered your gifts to the poor.

He and everyone in his home were devout and respected God. Cornelius gave many gifts to poor Jewish people and always prayed to God.

A disciple named Tabitha lived in the city of Joppa. Her Greek name was Dorcas. She always helped people and gave things to the poor.

Judas had the moneybag. So some thought that Jesus was telling him to buy what they needed for the festival or to give something to the poor.

How can you believe when you accept each other’s praise and don’t look for the praise that comes from the only God?

How can you say to another believer, ‘Friend, let me take the piece of sawdust out of your eye,’ when you don’t see the beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye. Then you will see clearly to remove the piece of sawdust from another believer’s eye.

and to have the front seats in synagogues and the places of honor at dinners.

Many people declare themselves loyal, but who can find someone who is ⌞really⌟ trustworthy?

Whoever has pity on the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his good deed.

He gives freely to poor people. His righteousness continues forever. His head is raised in honor.

Your love ⌞for God’s people⌟ gives me a lot of joy and encouragement. You, brother, have comforted God’s people.

We didn’t seek praise from people, from you or from anyone else,

All the disciples in Antioch decided to contribute whatever they could afford to help the believers living in Judea.

The Lord said, “You hypocrites! Don’t each of you free your ox or donkey on the day of rest—a holy day? Don’t you then take it out of its stall to give it some water to drink?

You hypocrites! You can forecast the weather by judging the appearance of earth and sky. But for some reason you don’t know how to judge the time in which you’re living.

“Sell your material possessions, and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves wallets that don’t wear out! Make a treasure for yourselves in heaven that never loses its value! In heaven thieves and moths can’t get close enough to destroy your treasure.

“How horrible it will be for you Pharisees! You love to sit in the front seats in the synagogues and to be greeted in the marketplaces.

Give what is inside as a gift to the poor, and then everything will be clean  for you.

“But how horrible it will be for those who are rich. They have had their comfort.

Jesus told them, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites in Scripture: ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.

Then his master will severely punish him and assign him a place with the hypocrites. People will cry and be in extreme pain there.

They love the place of honor at dinners and the front seats in synagogues.

Jesus recognized their evil plan, so he asked, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?

And in the morning you say that there will be a storm today because the sky is red and overcast. You can forecast the weather by judging the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.

You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

Share your food with the hungry, take the poor and homeless into your house, and cover them with clothes when you see ⌞them⌟ naked. Don’t refuse to help your relatives.

That is why the Lord isn’t happy with their young men, nor will he show compassion for their orphans and widows. Every one of them is a godless evildoer, and every mouth speaks foolishness. Even after all this, his anger will not disappear, and he is still ready to use his power.

Divide what you have into seven parts, or even into eight, because you don’t know what disaster may happen on earth.

Saul replied, “I have sinned! Now please honor me in front of the leaders of my people and in front of Israel. Come back with me, and let me worship the Lord your God.”

You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye. Then you will see clearly to remove the piece of sawdust from another believer’s eye.

I can guarantee this truth: Until the earth and the heavens disappear, neither a period nor a comma will disappear from the Scriptures before everything has come true.

I send them against a godless nation. In my fury I order them against the people to take their belongings, loot them, and trample on them like mud in the streets.

When you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

“They do everything to attract people’s attention. They make their headbands large and the tassels on their shawls long.

I may even give away all that I have and give up my body to be burned. But if I don’t have love, none of these things will help me.
