“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Never murder. Whoever murders will answer for it in court.’

So she said, “There’s an old saying: ‘Be sure to ask at Abel ⌞before doing anything⌟. That’s the way they settle matters.’

He appointed judges in the country, in each fortified city of Judah.

These cities will be places of refuge from any relative who can avenge the death. So anyone accused of murder will not have to die until he has had a trial in front of the community.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Never commit adultery.’

“You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Never break your oath, but give to the Lord what you swore in an oath to give him.’

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.’

Appoint judges and officers for your tribes in every city that the Lord your God is giving you. They are to judge the people fairly.

Everyone who hates another believer is a murderer, and you know that a murderer doesn’t have eternal life.
