Then they sat there and kept watch over him.
They placed a written accusation above his head. It read, “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews.”
An army officer and those watching Jesus with him saw the earthquake and the other things happening. They were terrified and said, “Certainly, this was the Son of God!”
When the officer who stood facing Jesus saw how he gave up his spirit, he said, “Certainly, this man was the Son of God!”
Pilate wondered if Jesus had already died. So he summoned the officer to ask him if Jesus was, in fact, dead.
