Did John’s right to baptize come from heaven or from humans?” They discussed this among themselves. They said, “If we say, ‘from heaven,’ he will ask us, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’

The disciples had been discussing among themselves that they had not taken any bread along.

Jesus answered them, “I, too, have a question for you. If you answer it for me, I’ll tell you why I have the right to do these things.

But if we say, ‘from humans,’ we’re afraid of what the crowd might do. All those people think of John as a prophet.”

But they didn’t say a thing. So Jesus took hold of the man, healed him, and sent him away.

They talked about this among themselves. They said, “If we say, ‘from heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’

(John declared the truth about him when he said loudly, “This is the person about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.’ ”)

God sent a man named John to be his messenger.

Those who believe in him won’t be condemned. But those who don’t believe are already condemned because they don’t believe in God’s only Son.

Whenever our conscience condemns us, we will be reassured that God is greater than our conscience and knows everything.
