I will turn my attention to a proverb. I will explain my riddle with the ⌞music of⌟ a lyre.

I will open my mouth to illustrate points. I will explain what has been hidden long ago,

“Son of man, tell this riddle. Give this illustration to the nation of Israel.

Then I said, “Oh no! Almighty Lord, no! The people already say that I’m only telling stories.”

When that day comes, people will make fun of you. They will sing this sad song about you: “We are completely ruined. The Lord gives our people’s possessions ⌞to others⌟. He takes them from us. He divides our fields among our captors.”

Won’t all of them ridicule him, directing clever sayings and riddles at him, like: “ ‘How horrible it will be for the one who makes himself rich with what is not his own and makes himself wealthy on loans. How long will this go on?’

Some seeds were planted along the road, and birds came and devoured them.

When Jesus had finished these illustrations, he left that place.

Again Jesus used stories as illustrations when he spoke to them. He said,

“Learn from the story of the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and it sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.

Then, using this illustration, Jesus spoke to them. He said, “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, made a vat for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to vineyard workers and went on a trip.

They wanted to arrest him but were afraid of the crowd. They knew that he had directed this illustration at them. So they left him alone and went away.

Jesus called them together and used this illustration: “How can Satan force out Satan?

Jesus asked them, “Don’t you understand this story? How, then, will you understand any of the stories I use as illustrations?

Jesus spoke ⌞God’s⌟ word to them using many illustrations like these. In this way people could understand what he taught.

Peter asked, “Lord, did you use this illustration just for us or for everyone?”

Jesus answered, “Knowledge about the mysteries of God’s kingdom has been given ⌞directly⌟ to you. But it is given to others in stories. When they look, they don’t see, and when they hear, they don’t understand.

“I have used examples to illustrate these things. The time is coming when I won’t use examples to speak to you. Rather, I will speak to you about the Father in plain words.
