“I can guarantee this truth: Of all the people ever born, no one is greater than John the Baptizer. Yet, the least important person in the kingdom of heaven is greater than John.

“A person who is born of a woman is short-lived and is full of trouble.

“If only an unclean person could become clean! It’s not possible.

Why should a mortal be considered faultless or someone born of a woman be considered righteous?

How can a person be righteous to God? How can anyone born of a woman be pure?

Indeed, I was born guilty. I was a sinner when my mother conceived me.

Then the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun. The light of the sun will be seven times as strong, like the light of seven days. When that day comes, the Lord will bandage his people’s injuries and heal the wounds he inflicted.

On that day the Lord will defend those who live in Jerusalem so that even those who stumble will be like David, and David’s family will be like God, like the Messenger of the Lord ahead of them.

John is the one about whom Scripture says, ‘I’m sending my messenger ahead of you to prepare the way in front of you.’

From the time of John the Baptizer until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful people have been seizing it.

Later, John the Baptizer appeared in the desert of Judea. His message was,

I baptize you with water so that you will change the way you think and act. But the one who comes after me is more powerful than I. I am not worthy to remove his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

So whoever sets aside any command that seems unimportant and teaches others to do the same will be unimportant in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever does and teaches what the commands say will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

As far as the Lord is concerned, he will be a great man. He will never drink wine or any other liquor. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born.

I can guarantee that of all the people ever born, no one is greater than John. Yet, the least important person in God’s kingdom is greater than John.

Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me. Whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. The one who is least among all of you is the one who is greatest.”

(John declared the truth about him when he said loudly, “This is the person about whom I said, ‘The one who comes after me was before me because he existed before I did.’ ”)

He’s the one who comes after me. I am not worthy to untie his sandal strap.”

Many people went to Jesus. They said, “John didn’t perform any miracles, but everything John said about this man is true.”

He must increase in importance, while I must decrease in importance.

John was a lamp that gave off brilliant light. For a time you enjoyed the pleasure of his light.

Jesus said this about the Spirit, whom his believers would receive. The Spirit was not yet evident, as it would be after Jesus had been glorified.

I’m the least of the apostles. I’m not even fit to be called an apostle because I persecuted God’s church.

When you have cases dealing with this life, why do you allow people whom the church has a low opinion of to be your judges?

All of us once lived among these people, and followed the desires of our corrupt nature. We did what our corrupt desires and thoughts wanted us to do. So, because of our nature, we deserved God’s anger just like everyone else.

I am the least of all God’s people. Yet, God showed me his kindness by allowing me to spread the Good News of the immeasurable wealth of Christ to people who are not Jewish.

Now with the coming of our Savior Christ Jesus, he has revealed it. Christ has destroyed death, and through the Good News he has brought eternal life into full view.

God planned to give us something very special so that we would gain eternal life with them.

The prophets carefully researched and investigated this salvation. Long ago they spoke about God’s kindness  that would come to you.

“Therefore, the Lord God of Israel declares: I certainly thought that your family and your father’s family would always live in my presence. “But now the Lord declares: I promise that I will honor those who honor me, and those who despise me will be considered insignificant.
