Then Jesus called the crowd to himself along with his disciples. He said to them, “Those who want to follow me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me.

I tore the kingdom away from David’s heirs and gave it to you. But you have not been like my servant David. He obeyed my commands and faithfully followed me by doing only what I considered right.

But because my servant Caleb has a different attitude and has wholeheartedly followed me, I’ll bring him to the land he already explored. His descendants will possess it.

Whoever doesn’t take up his cross and follow me doesn’t deserve to be my disciple.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Those who want to come with me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses, and follow me.

On the way they found a man named Simon. He was from the city of Cyrene. The soldiers forced him to carry Jesus’ cross.

Jesus looked at him and loved him. He told him, “You’re still missing one thing. Sell everything you have. Give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then follow me!”

Then he called the crowd again and said to them, “Listen to me, all of you, and try to understand!

“Try hard to enter through the narrow door. I can guarantee that many will try to enter, but they won’t succeed.

In the same way, none of you can be my disciples unless you give up everything.

When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still need one thing. Sell everything you have. Distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then follow me!”

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to the disciples,

He said to all of them, “Those who want to come with me must say no to the things they want, pick up their crosses every day, and follow me.

My sheep respond to my voice, and I know who they are. They follow me,

He carried his own cross and went out ⌞of the city⌟ to a location called The Skull. (In Hebrew this place is called Golgotha.)

They strengthened the disciples in these cities and encouraged the disciples to remain faithful. Paul and Barnabas told them, “We must suffer a lot to enter God’s kingdom.”

We know that the person we used to be was crucified with him to put an end to sin in our bodies. Because of this we are no longer slaves to sin.

If we are his children, we are also God’s heirs. If we share in Christ’s suffering in order to share his glory, we are heirs together with him.

Brothers and sisters, I swear to you on my pride in you which Christ Jesus our Lord has given me: I face death every day.

Therefore, if eating food ⌞offered to false gods⌟ causes other believers to lose their faith, I will never eat that kind of food so that I won’t make other believers lose their faith.

Although I’m free from all people, I have made myself a slave for all people to win more of them.

I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live I live by believing in God’s Son, who loved me and took the punishment for my sins.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their corrupt nature along with its passions and desires.

But it’s unthinkable that I could ever brag about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. By his cross my relationship to the world and its relationship to me have been crucified.

that knows Christ. Faith knows the power that his coming back to life gives and what it means to share his suffering. In this way I’m becoming like him in his death,

These things that I once considered valuable, I now consider worthless for Christ.

I am happy to suffer for you now. In my body I am completing whatever remains of Christ’s sufferings. I am doing this on behalf of his body, the church.

Therefore, put to death whatever is worldly in you: your sexual sin, perversion, passion, lust, and greed (which is the same thing as worshiping wealth).

We hear that some of you are not living disciplined lives. You’re not working, so you go around interfering in other people’s lives.

It trains us to avoid ungodly lives filled with worldly desires so that we can live self-controlled, moral, and godly lives in this present world.

So we must go to him outside the camp and endure the insults he endured.

Since Christ has suffered physically, take the same attitude that he had. (A person who has suffered physically no longer sins.)

but be happy as you share Christ’s sufferings. Then you will also be full of joy when he appears again in his glory.

I know that I will die soon. Our Lord Jesus Christ has made that clear to me.

We understand what love is when we realize that Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for other believers.

Don’t be afraid of what you are going to suffer. The devil is going to throw some of you into prison so that you may be tested. Your suffering will go on for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
