Then Joseph ordered the doctors in his service to embalm his father. So the doctors embalmed Israel.

They buried him in the tomb that he had prepared for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bed full of spices and blended perfumes. And they burned a bonfire in his honor.

Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had suffered from a skin disease. While Jesus was sitting there, a woman went to him. She had a bottle of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She opened the bottle and poured the perfume on his head.

She did what she could. She came to pour perfume on my body before it is placed in a tomb.

Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary from Magdala, Mary (the mother of young James and Joseph), and Salome.

It was Friday evening, before the day of rest—a holy day,

Mary from Magdala and Mary (the mother of Joses) watched where Jesus was laid.

On Sunday they were going to the tomb very early when the sun had just come up.

They went out of the tomb and ran away. Shock and trembling had overwhelmed them. They didn’t say a thing to anyone, because they were afraid.

It was Friday, and the day of rest—a holy day, was just beginning.

Then they went back to the city and prepared spices and perfumes. But on the day of rest—a holy day, they rested according to the commandment.

Very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb. They were carrying the spices that they had prepared.

Jesus’ mother, her sister, Mary (the wife of Clopas), and Mary from Magdala were standing beside Jesus’ cross.

Since it was Friday and the next day was an especially important day of rest—a holy day, the Jews didn’t want the bodies to stay on the crosses. So they asked Pilate to have the men’s legs broken and their bodies removed.
