The disciples were stunned by his words. But Jesus said to them again, “Children, how hard it is to enter God’s kingdom!

With your power rescue me from mortals, O Lord, from mortals who enjoy their inheritance only in this life. You fill their bellies with your treasure. Their children are satisfied ⌞with it⌟, and they leave what remains to their children.

“Look at this person who refused to make God his fortress! Instead, he trusted his great wealth and became strong through his greed.”

Do not count on extortion ⌞to make you rich⌟. Do not hope to gain anything through robbery. When riches increase, do not depend on them.

Whoever trusts his riches will fall, but righteous people will flourish like a green leaf.

A rich person’s wealth is his strong city and is like a high wall in his imagination.

Will you catch only a fleeting glimpse of wealth before it is gone? It makes wings for itself like an eagle flying into the sky.

This is what the Lord says: Don’t let wise people brag about their wisdom. Don’t let strong people brag about their strength. Don’t let rich people brag about their riches.

“ ‘How horrible it will be for the one who uses violence to get things for his own household in order to set his nest up high and save himself from disaster.’

Their silver and their gold will not be able to rescue them on the day of the Lord’s overflowing fury. The whole earth will be consumed by his fiery anger, because he will put an end, a frightening end, to those who live on earth.

He amazed his disciples more than ever when they heard this. “Then who can be saved?” they asked.

Everyone was stunned. They said to each other, “What is this? This is a new teaching that has authority behind it! He gives orders to evil spirits, and they obey him.”

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it will be for rich people to enter God’s kingdom!”

The Pharisees, who love money, heard all this and were making sarcastic remarks about him.

Jesus said, “Dear children, I will still be with you for a little while. I’m telling you what I told the Jews. You will look for me, but you can’t go where I’m going.

Jesus asked them, “Friends, haven’t you caught any fish?” They answered him, “No, we haven’t.”

When many of Jesus’ disciples heard him, they said, “What he says is hard to accept. Who wants to listen to him anymore?”

My children, I am suffering birth pains for you again until Christ is formed in you.

Tell those who have the riches of this world not to be arrogant and not to place their confidence in anything as uncertain as riches. Instead, they should place their confidence in God who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.

My dear children, I’m writing this to you so that you will not sin. Yet, if anyone does sin, we have Jesus Christ, who has God’s full approval. He speaks on our behalf when we come into the presence of the Father.

Dear children, you belong to God. So you have won the victory over these people, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.

Dear children, guard yourselves from false gods.

You say, ‘I’m rich. I’m wealthy. I don’t need anything.’ Yet, you do not realize that you are miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
