Some Pharisees came to test him. They asked, “Can a husband divorce his wife?”

“I hate divorce,” says the Lord God of Israel. “I hate the person who covers himself with violence,” says the Lord of Armies. “Be careful not to be unfaithful.”

Then the disciples came and said to him, “Do you realize that when the Pharisees heard your statement they were offended?”

The Pharisees and Sadducees came to test Jesus. So they asked him to show them a miraculous sign from heaven.

Some Pharisees came to test him. They asked, “Can a man divorce his wife for any reason?”

One of them, an expert in Moses’ Teachings, tested Jesus by asking,

“How horrible it will be for you, experts in Moses’ Teachings and Pharisees! You hypocrites! You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You don’t enter it yourselves, and you don’t permit others to enter when they try.

But the Pharisees said, “He forces demons out of people with the help of the ruler of demons.”

Jesus left there and went into the territory of Judea along the other side of the Jordan River. Crowds gathered around him again, and he taught them as he usually did.

Jesus answered them, “What command did Moses give you?”

The Pharisees went to Jesus and began to argue with him. They tested him by demanding that he perform a miraculous sign from heaven.

Jesus warned them, “Be careful! Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!”

The Lord said to him, “You Pharisees clean the outside of cups and dishes. But inside you are full of greed and evil.

The Pharisees, who love money, heard all this and were making sarcastic remarks about him.

The Pharisees and their experts in Moses’ Teachings complained to Jesus’ disciples. They asked, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The experts in Moses’ Teachings and the Pharisees were watching Jesus closely. They wanted to see whether he would heal the man on the day of rest—a holy day, so that they could find a way to accuse him of doing something wrong.

But the Pharisees and the experts in Moses’ Teachings rejected God’s plan for them. They refused to be baptized.

So the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the council. They asked, “What are we doing? This man is performing a lot of miracles.

(The chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that whoever knew where Jesus was should tell them so that they could arrest him.)

The Pharisees heard the crowd saying things like this about him. So the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest Jesus.

Has any ruler or any Pharisee believed in him?

They asked this to test him. They wanted to find a reason to bring charges against him. Jesus bent down and used his finger to write on the ground.

We shouldn’t put the Lord  to the test as some of them did. They were killed by snakes.
