From morning to evening, they are shattered. They will disappear forever without anyone paying attention.

Who knows what may be good for mortals while they are alive, during the brief, pointless days they live? Mortals pass by like a shadow. Who will tell them about their future under the sun?

“Son of man, with one blow I’m going to take away from you the person you love the most. But you must not mourn, cry, or let tears run down your face.

“Son of man, on that day I will take their stronghold away from them. It makes them happy and proud. It is their hearts’ desire and the thing they love the most. I will also take away their sons and daughters.

“I will pour out the Spirit of blessing and mercy on David’s family and on those who live in Jerusalem. They will look at me, whom they have stabbed. Then they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and they will cry bitterly for him as one cries for a firstborn son.

Jesus went with the man. A huge crowd followed Jesus and pressed him on every side.

As he came near the entrance to the city, he met a funeral procession. The dead man was a widow’s only child. A large crowd from the city was with her.

A man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, arrived and quickly bowed down in front of Jesus. He begged Jesus to come to his home.

A woman who had been suffering from chronic bleeding for twelve years was in the crowd. No one could cure her.

Jesus asked, “Who touched me?” After everyone denied touching him, Peter said, “Teacher, the people are crowding you and pressing against you.”

Sin came into the world through one person, and death came through sin. So death spread to everyone, because everyone sinned.
