“This is what you must do whenever someone gives his neighbor a donkey, a bull, a sheep, or any other kind of animal to keep for him, and it dies, is injured, or is captured in war, and there are no witnesses.

You may work for six days, but the seventh day is a day of rest—a holy day, a day when you don’t work. It is holy to the Lord. Whoever works on that day must be put to death.

The Pharisees asked him, “Look! Why are your disciples doing something that is not permitted on the day of rest—a holy day?”

They said to him, “John’s disciples frequently fast and say prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. But your disciples eat and drink.”

The Jews began to persecute Jesus because he kept healing people on the day of rest—a holy day.
