“The Spirit of the Lord is with me. He has anointed me to tell the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to announce forgiveness to the prisoners of sin and the restoring of sight to the blind, to forgive those who have been shattered by sin,

The Spirit of the Almighty Lord is with me because the Lord has anointed me to deliver good news to humble people. He has sent me to heal those who are brokenhearted, to announce that captives will be set free and prisoners will be released.

Blind people see again, lame people are walking, those with skin diseases are made clean, deaf people hear again, dead people are brought back to life, and poor people hear the Good News.

You know that God anointed Jesus from Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Jesus went everywhere and did good things, such as healing everyone who was under the devil’s power. Jesus did these things because God was with him.

Jesus answered John’s disciples, “Go back, and tell John what you have seen and heard: Blind people see again, lame people are walking, those with skin diseases are made clean, deaf people hear again, dead people are brought back to life, and poor people hear the Good News.

You will open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light and from Satan’s control to God’s. Then they will receive forgiveness for their sins and a share among God’s people who are made holy by believing in me.’

You will give sight to the blind, bring prisoners out of prisons, and bring those who live in darkness out of dungeons.

I am the light that has come into the world so that everyone who believes in me will not live in the dark.

However, you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, people who belong to God. You were chosen to tell about the excellent qualities of God, who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

God has rescued us from the power of darkness and has brought us into the kingdom of his Son, whom he loves.

The people who lived in darkness have seen a bright light. A light has risen for those who live in a land overshadowed by death.”

Then the vision of those who can see won’t be blurred, and the ears of those who can hear will pay attention.

He is the healer of the brokenhearted. He is the one who bandages their wounds.

Then the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unplugged.

“Blessed are those who recognize they are spiritually helpless. The kingdom of heaven belongs to them.

Jesus looked at his disciples and said, “Blessed are those who are poor. God’s kingdom is theirs.

“The Sun of Righteousness will rise with healing in his wings for you people who fear my name. You will go out and leap like calves let out of a stall.

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters! Didn’t God choose poor people in the world to become rich in faith and to receive the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?

The man whom God has sent speaks God’s message. After all, God gives him the Spirit without limit.

“This is my promise  to them,” says the Lord. “My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I put in your mouth will not leave you. They will be with your children and your grandchildren permanently,” says the Lord.

The Almighty Lord will teach me what to say, so I will know how to encourage weary people. Morning after morning he will wake me to listen like a student.

He heard the groans of the prisoners and set free those who were condemned to death.

“Seventy sets of seven time periods have been assigned for your people and your holy city. These time periods will serve to bring an end to rebellion, to stop sin, to forgive wrongs, to usher in everlasting righteousness, to put a seal on a prophet’s vision, and to anoint the Most Holy One.

The High and Lofty One lives forever, and his name is holy. This is what he says: I live in a high and holy place. But I am with those who are crushed and humble. I will renew the spirit of those who are humble and the courage of those who are crushed.

You will say to the prisoners, “Come out,” and to those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.” They will graze along every path, and they will find pastures on every bare hill.

I prepared Cyrus for my righteous purpose. I will make all his roads straight. He will build my city and let my exiles go free without any payment or any reward, says the Lord of Armies.

The Lord is near to those whose hearts are humble. He saves those whose spirits are crushed.

“I have installed my own king on Zion, my holy mountain.”

So with you I will leave a faithful few, a humble and poor people. They will seek refuge in the name of the Lord.

Kings take their stands. Rulers make plans together against the Lord and against his Messiah  by saying,

Andrew at once found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).

He will not break off a damaged cattail. He will not even put out a smoking wick until he has made justice victorious.

The sacrifice pleasing to God is a broken spirit. O God, you do not despise a broken and sorrowful heart.

So it was broken on that day, and the oppressed among the sheep who were watching me realized that it was the Lord’s word.

The Lord said to that person, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of those who sigh and groan about all the disgusting things that are being done in the city.”

I have made all these things. “That is why all these things have come into being,” declares the Lord. I will pay attention to those who are humble and sorry ⌞for their sins⌟ and who tremble at my word.

I will make you and the woman hostile toward each other. I will make your descendants and her descendant hostile toward each other. He will crush your head, and you will bruise his heel.”

“In this city Herod and Pontius Pilate made plans together with non-Jewish people and the people of Israel. They made their plans against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed.

You have loved what is right and hated what is wrong. That is why God, your God, has anointed you, rather than your companions, with the oil of joy.

You had a change of heart and humbled yourself in front of God when you heard my words against this place and those who live here. You humbled yourself, tore your clothes ⌞in distress⌟, and cried in front of me. So I will listen ⌞to you⌟, declares the Lord.

“Here is my servant whom I have chosen, whom I love, and in whom I delight. I will put my Spirit on him, and he will announce justice to the nations.

The attendant gave him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened it and found the place where it read:
