So Jesus said to them, “You try to justify your actions in front of people. But God knows what’s in your hearts. What is important to humans is disgusting to God.

But the Lord told Samuel, “Don’t look at his appearance or how tall he is, because I have rejected him. God does not see as humans see. Humans look at outward appearances, but the Lord looks into the heart.”

A person thinks everything he does is right, but the Lord weighs hearts.

Therefore, don’t judge anything before the appointed time. Wait until the Lord comes. He will also bring to light what is hidden in the dark and reveal people’s motives. Then each person will receive praise from God.

I, the Lord, search minds and test hearts. I will reward each person for what he has done. I will reward him for the results of his actions.

Everyone with a conceited heart is disgusting to the Lord. Certainly, ⌞such a person⌟ will not go unpunished.

So when you give to the poor, don’t announce it with trumpet fanfare. This is what hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets in order to be praised by people. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward.

So now we call arrogant people blessed. Not only are evildoers encouraged, they even test God and get away with it.’ ”

Jesus asked him a third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt sad because Jesus had asked him a third time, “Do you love me?” So Peter said to him, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.” Jesus told him, “Feed my sheep.

The wicked person boasts about his selfish desires. He blesses robbers, but he curses the Lord.

Jesus also used this illustration with some who were sure that God approved of them while they looked down on everyone else.

“I can guarantee that this tax collector went home with God’s approval, but the Pharisee didn’t. Everyone who honors himself will be humbled, but the person who humbles himself will be honored.”

Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s thoughts. Show us which of these two you have chosen.

The one who searches our hearts knows what the Spirit has in mind. The Spirit intercedes for God’s people the way God wants him to.
