He will go ahead of the Lord with the spirit and power that Elijah had. He will change parents’ attitudes toward their children. He will change disobedient people so that they will accept the wisdom of those who have God’s approval. In this way he will prepare the people for their Lord.”

Elijah, who was from Tishbe but had settled in Gilead, said to Ahab, “I solemnly swear, as the Lord God of Israel whom I serve lives, there will be no dew or rain during the next few years unless I say so.”

Elijah answered, “I haven’t troubled Israel. You and your father’s family have done it by disobeying the Lord’s commands and following the various Baal gods.

Ahab asked Elijah, “So you’ve found me, my enemy?” Elijah answered, “I found you. Because you sold yourself to do what the Lord considers evil.

Elijah told the king, “This is what the Lord says: You sent messengers to seek advice from Baalzebub, the god of Ekron. Is this because ⌞you think⌟ there is no God in Israel whose word you can seek? You will not get up from the bed you are lying on. Instead, you will die there.”

Lord God of our ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, always watch over your people’s deepest thoughts. Keep their hearts directed toward you.

Hezekiah and all the people were overjoyed because of what God had done for the people. Everything had happened so quickly.

You have heard the desire of oppressed people, O Lord. You encourage them. You pay close attention to them

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Good sense is shown by everyone who follows ⌞God’s guiding principles⌟. His praise continues forever.

Then they will not be like their ancestors, a stubborn and rebellious generation. Their hearts were not loyal. Their spirits were not faithful to God.

Then those who are wayward in spirit will gain understanding, and those who complain will accept instruction.

This is what I will do to you, Israel. Prepare to meet your God. This is what I will do to you, Israel!

If you are willing to accept their message, John is the Elijah who was to come.

John had been telling Herod, “It’s not right for you to be married to her.”

Isaiah the prophet spoke about this man when he said, “A voice cries out in the desert: ‘Prepare the way for the Lord! Make his paths straight!’ ”

John wore clothes made from camel’s hair and had a leather belt around his waist. His diet consisted of locusts and wild honey.

He will bring many people in Israel back to the Lord their God.

“You, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High. You will go ahead of the Lord to prepare his way.

These people didn’t become God’s children in a physical way—from a human impulse or from a husband’s desire ⌞to have a child⌟. They were born from God.

I have seen this and have declared that this is the Son of God.”

You are witnesses that I said, ‘I’m not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’

So I sent for you immediately. Thank you for coming. All of us are here now in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has ordered you to say.”

Can’t God also reveal the riches of his glory to people who are objects of his mercy and who he had already prepared for glory?

You will also thank the Father, who has made you able to share the light, which is what God’s people inherit.

Those who stop associating with dishonorable people will be honored. They will be set apart for the master’s use, prepared to do good things.

However, you are chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, people who belong to God. You were chosen to tell about the excellent qualities of God, who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

Now, dear children, live in Christ. Then, when he appears we will have confidence, and when he comes we won’t turn from him in shame.

I saw thrones, and those who sat on them were allowed to judge. Then I saw the souls of those whose heads had been cut off because of their testimony about Jesus and because of God’s word. They had not worshiped the beast or its statue and were not branded on their foreheads or hands. They lived and ruled with Christ for 1,000 years.

Then Samuel said, “Gather all the Israelites together at Mizpah, and I will pray to the Lord for you.”
