Leviticus 26:22

I will send wild animals among you. They will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle, and make you so few that your roads will be deserted.

When they first came to live there, they didn’t worship the Lord. So the Lord sent lions to kill some of them.

Looking back, he saw them and cursed them in the Lord’s name. Two bears came out of the woods and tore 42 of these youths apart.

At those times no one could come and go in peace, because everyone living in the land had a lot of turmoil.

That is why a curse devours the earth, and its people are punished for their guilt. That is why those who live on the earth are burned up, and only a few people are left.

Highways are deserted. Travelers stop traveling. Agreements are broken. Witnesses  are rejected. People are no longer respected.

“I will devise four ways to punish them,” declares the Lord. “I will send swords to kill, dogs to drag away, and birds and animals to devour and destroy.

They said to him, “Please listen to our request, and pray to the Lord your God for all of us who are left here. As you can see, there are only a few of us left.

“The roads to Zion are deserted. No one comes to the annual festivals. No one passes through any of its gates. Its priests are groaning. Its young women are made to suffer. Zion is bitter.

“Suppose I send wild animals through that country and they make it childless and turn it into such a wasteland that no one travels through it because of the animals.

“This is what the Almighty Lord says: I will surely send four terrible punishments against Jerusalem. I will send wars, famines, wild animals, and plagues. They will destroy people and animals.

I will turn the land into a barren wasteland. People will no longer brag about its power. The mountains of Israel will become so ruined that no one will travel through them.

I will send famines and wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children. I will send plagues, violence, and wars to kill you. I, the Lord, have spoken.”

“I will bring peace to your land. You will lie down with no one to scare you. I will remove dangerous animals, and there will be no war in your land.

Because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a pile of rubble, and the temple mountain will become a worship site covered with trees.

I used a windstorm to scatter them among all the nations, nations they hadn’t even heard of. They left behind a land so ruined that no one is able to travel through it. They have turned a pleasant land into a wasteland.”

They will be starved by famines and ravaged by pestilence and deadly epidemics. I will send vicious animals against them along with poisonous animals that crawl on the ground.

In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath, in the days of Jael, roads were deserted. Those who traveled took back roads.
