On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this, and you will live. I, too, fear God.

Now you intend to enslave the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But aren’t you also guilty of sinning against the Lord your God?

“If I have abused the rights of my servants, male or female, when they have disagreed with me,

then what could I do if God rises up? If he examines me, how could I answer him?

However, the midwives feared God and didn’t obey the king of Egypt’s orders. They let the boys live.

Because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

After a long time passed, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites still groaned because they were slaves. So they cried out, and their cries for help went up to God.

The Lord said, “I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt, and I have heard them crying out because of the slave drivers. I know how much they’re suffering.

I have heard the cry of the people of Israel. I have seen how the Egyptians are oppressing them.

Pharaoh’s slave drivers had placed Israelite foremen in charge of the people. The slave drivers beat the foremen and said, “You didn’t finish all the bricks you were ordered to make yesterday or today. Why didn’t you make as many as you used to?”

I was angry with my people. I dishonored those who belong to me. I put them under your control. You showed them no mercy. You placed a heavy burden on old people.

Why have we fasted if you are not aware of it? Why have we inflicted pain on ourselves if you don’t pay attention? Don’t you see that on the days you fast, you do what you want to do? You mistreat all your workers.

You have not strengthened those that were weak, healed those that were sick, or bandaged those that were injured. You have not brought back those that strayed away or looked for those that were lost. You have ruled them harshly and violently.

Never take advantage of each other. Fear your God, because I am the Lord your God.

They are my servants. I brought them out of Egypt. They must never be sold as slaves.

“You may have male and female slaves, but buy them from the nations around you.

You may acquire them for yourselves and for your descendants as permanent property. You may work them as slaves. However, do not treat the Israelites harshly. They are your relatives.

During those years he should serve his buyer as a hired worker. His buyer should not treat him harshly.

“I will come to judge you. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers, lying witnesses, and those who cheat workers out of their wages and oppress widows and orphans. I will also testify against those who deprive foreigners of their rights. None of them fear me,” says the Lord of Armies.

Masters, treat your slaves with respect. Don’t threaten a slave. You know that there is one master in heaven who has authority over both of you, and he doesn’t play favorites.

They attacked you when you were tired and exhausted and killed all those who were lagging behind. They weren’t afraid of God.

Masters, be just and fair to your slaves because you know that you also have a master in heaven.
