“Remember, O Lord, what has happened to us. Take a look at our disgrace!

They told me, “Those who survived captivity are in the province. They are enduring serious troubles and being insulted. The wall of Jerusalem has been broken down, and its gates have been destroyed by fire.”

Please remember what you told us through your servant Moses: ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations.

⌞Nehemiah prayed,⌟ “Our God, hear us. We are despised. Turn their insults back on them, and let them be robbed in the land where they are prisoners.

Please remember that you made me out of clay and that you will return me to the dust again.

Remember, my life is only a breath, and never again will my eyes see anything good.

Look at my misery, and rescue me, because I have never forgotten your teachings.

Remember how the enemy insulted you, O Lord. Remember how an entire nation of godless fools despised your name.

Pay each one of our neighbors back with seven times the number of insults they used to insult you, O Lord.

We have become a disgrace to our neighbors, an object of ridicule and contempt to those around us.

I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem. They will never be silent day or night. Whoever calls on the Lord, do not give yourselves any rest,

O Lord, you understand. Remember me, take care of me, and take revenge on those who persecute me. Be patient, and don’t take me away. You should know that I’ve been insulted because of you.

We have been put to shame, and we have been disgraced. Shame covers our faces, because foreigners have gone into the holy places of the Lord’s temple.

All the people are groaning as they beg for bread. They trade their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. ‘O Lord, look and see how despised I am!’ ”

“O Lord, see the distress I’m in! My stomach is churning. My heart is pounding because I’ve been very bitter. In the streets swords kill my children. Inside the houses it’s like death.

Jerusalem’s own filth ⌞covers⌟ its clothes. It gave no thought to its future. Its downfall was shocking. No one offers it comfort. ‘O Lord, look at my suffering, because my enemies have triumphed.’

Everyone who walks along the road shakes a fist at you. They hiss and shake their heads at Jerusalem’s people: ‘Is this the city they used to call absolutely beautiful, the joy of the whole world?’

“O Lord, look and consider: Have you ever treated anyone like this? Should women eat their own children, the children they have nursed? Should priests and prophets be killed in the Lord’s holy place?

Remember my suffering and my ⌞aimless⌟ wandering, the wormwood and poison.

until the Lord looks down from heaven and sees.

Listen to their insults, all their plots against me.

Lord, I have heard the report about you. Lord, I fear your work. In the course of the years, renew it. In the course of the years, reveal it. In all this chaos, remember to be merciful.

Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom.”
