God's Word

Adoni Bezek said, “Seventy kings who had their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up food under my table. God has paid me back for what I did to them.” Judah’s troops brought Adoni Bezek to Jerusalem, where he died.

They show that some requirements found in Moses’ Teachings are written in their hearts. Their consciences speak to them. Their thoughts accuse them on one occasion and defend them on another.

No mercy will be shown to those who show no mercy to others. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

If anyone is taken prisoner, he must go to prison. If anyone is killed with a sword, with a sword he must be killed. In this situation God’s holy people need endurance and confidence.

You have given them blood to drink because they have poured out the blood of God’s people and prophets. This is what they deserve.”

Adoni Bezek fled. Judah’s troops chased him, caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.

God did this so that the bloody violence committed against Jerubbaal’s 70 sons would happen to Abimelech and citizens of Shechem. Citizens of Shechem had helped Abimelech execute his brothers.

God also paid back the men of Shechem for all their evil. So the curse of Jotham, son of Jerubbaal, came true.

But Samuel said, “As your sword made women childless, so your mother will be made childless among women.” And Samuel cut Agag in pieces in the presence of the Lord at Gilgal.
