When the men of Ai looked back, they could see the city going up in smoke. They had no place to go, since the Israelites, who had been running toward the desert, had now turned back on them.

When he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah and all the land in the plain, he saw smoke rising from the land like the thick smoke of a furnace.

Brave people were robbed. They died. None of the warriors were able to lift a hand.

They will not be extinguished day or night, and smoke will always go up from them. Edom will lie in ruins for generations. No one will ever travel through it.

But when the column of smoke started to rise from the city, the men of Benjamin turned around and saw the whole city going up in smoke.

Then the men of Israel turned around, and the men of Benjamin panicked. They realized that their evil had overtaken them.
