Joshua 23:1

God's Word

A long time afterward, the Lord gave the Israelites peace with all their enemies around them. Joshua was old, near the end of his life.

Then he took his last breath, and died at a very old age. After a long and full life, he joined his ancestors in death.

King David had grown old, and although he was covered with blankets, he couldn’t get warm.

David had said, “The Lord God of Israel has given his people rest. He will now live in Jerusalem forever.

This is a list of Israelite family heads, regiment and battalion commanders, and officers who were serving the king in all the army’s units. Throughout each year they came for a month at a time and then left. Each unit consisted of 24,000 men.

He got rid of the illegal places of worship and the altars for incense in all the cities of Judah. The kingdom was at peace during his reign.

Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was peaceful, since his God surrounded him with peace.

He puts an end to wars all over the earth. He breaks an archer’s bow. He cuts spears in two. He burns chariots.

Like animals going down into a valley, they were given rest by the Lord’s Spirit. In this way you guided your people to make an honored name for yourself.

“I’m 120 years old now, and I’m not able to lead you anymore. Besides, the Lord has told me that I cannot cross the Jordan River.

Joshua captured the whole land as the Lord had promised Moses. He gave it to Israel as a possession, dividing it among the tribes. So the land had peace.

Joshua was old, near the end of his life. So the Lord said to him, “You are old, near the end of your life, and there is a lot of land left to be conquered.

The Lord allowed them to have peace on every side, as he had sworn with an oath to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies stood up to them. The Lord handed all their enemies over to them.

“Now the Lord your God has given your relatives peace, as he promised them. So return home, to the land that is your own possession. It is the land that the Lord’s servant Moses gave you east of the Jordan River.

And now, here is the king who will lead you. I am old and gray, but my sons are with you. I have led you from my youth until this day.
