Joseph’s descendants asked Joshua, “Why did you give us only one region for an inheritance? We have a lot of people because the Lord has blessed us.”

His father refused and said, “I know, Son, I know! Manasseh, too, will become a nation, and he, too, will be important. Nevertheless, his younger brother will be more important than he, and his descendants will become many nations.”

That day he blessed them. He said, “Because of you, Israel will speak this blessing, ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh!’ ” In this way Israel put Ephraim ahead of Manasseh.

I’m giving you one more mountain ridge than your brothers. I took it from the Amorites with my own sword and bow.”

Ephraim will have one part of the land and border Manasseh on the south. It will extend from the eastern border to the western border.

Igal, son of Joseph, from the tribe of Issachar;

Give more land to larger tribes and less land to smaller ones. Use the totals ⌞from the census⌟ in giving land to each tribe.

They married within the families of the descendants of Manasseh, son of Joseph. So their land stayed in the tribe of their father’s family.

So Joseph’s sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, received this land as their inheritance.

Joshua replied, “If there are so many of you, go into the forest! Clear ground for yourselves there in the land of the Perizzites and Rephaim if the mountains of Ephraim are too confining for you.”
