Joshua gave Caleb, son of Jephunneh, a share of land among the people of Judah as the Lord had told them. It was Kiriath Arba (now called Hebron). Arba was the father of Anak.

They gave them Kiriath Arba (Arba was Anak’s father) and the pastureland around it. This is the city of Hebron located in the mountains of Judah.

But they gave its fields and villages to Caleb, son of Jephunneh, as his possession.

As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who forced out the three sons of Anak.

So there was finally peace in the land for 40 years. Then Othniel, son of Kenaz, died.

The power of Moab was crushed by Israel that day. So there was finally peace in the land for 80 years.

May all your enemies die like that, O Lord. But may those who love the Lord be like the sun when it rises in all its brightness. So the land had peace for 40 years.

The power of Midian was crushed by the people of Israel, and Midian never again became a threat. So the land had peace for 40 years during Gideon’s life.

Hebron, and to all the places David and his men visited from time to time.
