Some of his disciples said to each other, “What does he mean? He tells us that in a little while we won’t see him. Then he tells us that in a little while we will see him again and that he’s going to the Father.”

They kept in mind what he said but argued among themselves what he meant by “come back to life.”

The disciples didn’t understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him.

But they didn’t understand any of this. What he said was a mystery to them, and they didn’t know what he meant.

They didn’t know what he meant. The meaning was hidden from them so that they didn’t understand it. Besides, they were afraid to ask him about what he had said.

At first Jesus’ disciples didn’t know what these prophecies meant. However, when Jesus was glorified, the disciples remembered that these prophecies had been written about him. The disciples remembered that they had taken part in fulfilling the prophecies.

Judas (not Iscariot) asked Jesus, “Lord, what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you’re going. So how can we know the way?”

⌞Jesus continued,⌟ “I have said these things to you so that you won’t lose your faith.

“In a little while you won’t see me anymore. Then in a little while you will see me again.”

So they were asking each other, “What does he mean when he says, ‘In a little while’? We don’t understand what he’s talking about.”

Jesus knew they wanted to ask him something. So he said to them, “Are you trying to figure out among yourselves what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you won’t see me, and in a little while you will see me again’?

“Now I’m going to the one who sent me. Yet, none of you asks me where I’m going.
