Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had suffered from a skin disease. While Jesus was sitting there, a woman went to him. She had a bottle of very expensive perfume made from pure nard. She opened the bottle and poured the perfume on his head.

When the Lord saw her, he felt sorry for her. He said to her, “Don’t cry.”

and sent them to ask the Lord, “Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for someone else?”

Martha told Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

So the sisters sent a messenger to tell Jesus, “Lord, your close friend is sick.”

When Mary arrived where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Mary took a bottle of very expensive perfume made from pure nard and poured it on Jesus’ feet. Then she dried his feet with her hair. The fragrance of the perfume filled the house.

You call me teacher and Lord, and you’re right because that’s what I am.

So if I, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet, you must wash each other’s feet.
