It claps its hands over him. It whistles at him from his own place.

Everyone passing by this temple, as impressive as it is, will be appalled. They will gasp and ask, ‘Why did the Lord do these things to this land and this temple?’

He will be driven from the light into the dark and chased out of the world.

He will fly away like a dream and not be found. He will be chased away like a vision in the night.

“There is a place where silver is mined and a place where gold is refined.

He adds disobedience to his sin. He claps his hands to insult us. He multiplies his words against God.”

He doesn’t come back home again, and his household doesn’t recognize him anymore.

When righteous people prosper, a city is glad. When wicked people die, there are songs of joy.

I will devastate this city. It will become something to hiss at. Everyone who goes by it will be stunned and hiss with contempt at all the disasters that happen to it.

Everyone who walks along the road shakes a fist at you. They hiss and shake their heads at Jerusalem’s people: ‘Is this the city they used to call absolutely beautiful, the joy of the whole world?’

“ ‘This is what the Almighty Lord says: You clapped your hands and stomped your feet. You rejoiced and felt contempt for the land of Israel.

You have kept Omri’s laws and all the practices of the descendants of Ahab, and you have followed their advice. That is why I will ruin you. Your people will be ridiculed. You will bear the disgrace of my people.”

There is no relief for your collapse. Your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you will clap their hands. Who hasn’t suffered from your endless evil?

Is this the arrogant city? Is this the city that used to live securely, the city that used to think to itself, “I’m the only one, and no one else exists but me”? What a wasteland it is now, a resting place for wild animals! All who pass by it will hiss and make an obscene gesture.

“Gloat over it, heaven, God’s people, apostles, and prophets. God has condemned it for you.”
