On the seventeenth day of the second month of the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, all the deep springs burst open. The sky opened,

⌞so⌟ water wears away stone, floods wash away soil from the land, and you destroy a mortal’s hope.

It will happen before his time has come, and his branch will not become green.

They spend their days in happiness, and they go peacefully to the grave.

How often are they like straw in the wind or like husks that the storm sweeps away?

Such people are like scum on the surface of the water. Their property is cursed in the land. People do not travel the road that goes to their vineyards.

They die while they’re young, or they live on as male prostitutes in the temples of idols.

How much more will he accuse those who live in clay houses that have their foundation in the dust. Those houses can be crushed quicker than a moth!

I said, “My God, don’t take me now in the middle of my life. Your years ⌞continue on⌟ throughout every generation.

But you, O God, will throw ⌞wicked people⌟ into the deepest pit. Bloodthirsty and deceitful people will not live out half their days. But I will trust you.

You sweep mortals away. They are a dream. They sprout again in the morning like cut grass.

The fear of the Lord lengthens ⌞the number of⌟ days, but the years of wicked people are shortened.

Don’t be too wicked, and don’t be a fool. Why should you die before your time is up?

The Lord has one who is strong and powerful. He is like a hailstorm, a destructive wind. He is like a thunderstorm, an overwhelming flood. He will throw them to the ground forcefully.

God didn’t spare the ancient world either. He brought the flood on the world of ungodly people, but he protected Noah and seven other people. Noah was his messenger who told people about the kind of life that has God’s approval.
