The snorting of horses can be heard from Dan. The neighing of stallions makes the whole land tremble. They are coming to devour the land and everything in it, the city and its people.

The earth and everything it contains are the Lord’s. The world and all who live in it are his.

Pour out your fury on the nations who don’t know you and on people who don’t worship you. They have devoured the descendants of Jacob. They have devoured them completely. They have destroyed their homes.

Ever since we were young, the shameful worship ⌞of Baal⌟ has taken everything our ancestors worked for, their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.

That is why everyone who devours you will be devoured, and all your enemies will be taken away as captives. Those who looted you will be looted. Those who stole from you in war will have things stolen from them.

They will devour your harvest and your food. They will devour your sons and your daughters. They will devour your flocks and your cattle. They will devour your grapevines and your fig trees. With their swords they will destroy the fortified cities you trust.

They will take hold of bows and spears. They will be cruel and have no compassion. They will sound like the sea when it roars. They will ride horses. They are ready for war, ready to attack you, people of Babylon.

The earth trembles and writhes in pain. The Lord carries out his plans against Babylon to make Babylon a wasteland so that no one will live there.

The sound of the whip! The sound of rattling wheels! Horses gallop! Chariots bounce along!

The mountains look at you. They writhe in pain. Floodwaters pass by. The deep ocean roars. Its waves rise up high.

Certainly, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything it contains is his.”

However, if someone says to you, “This was sacrificed to a god,” don’t eat it because of the one who informed you and because of conscience.

They named the city Dan in honor of their ancestor Dan, Israel’s son. Originally, the city was called Laish.

All the people of Israel from Dan to Beersheba and from Gilead came to Mizpah. The congregation stood united in the presence of the Lord.

Then the horses’ hoofs pounded. The mighty war horses galloped on and on.
