He rains down fire and burning sulfur upon wicked people. He makes them drink from a cup filled with scorching wind.

That is why I say, “Turn away from me so that I can cry bitterly. Don’t try to comfort me because of the destruction brought on my people.”

He punished Israel by sending it away. He removed it with a fierce blast from the east winds.

You will winnow  them. The wind will carry them away. The windstorm will scatter them. But you will find joy in the Lord and praise the Holy One of Israel.

We’ve all become unclean, and all our righteous acts are like permanently stained rags. All of us shrivel like leaves, and our sins carry us away like the wind.

“I will scatter you like straw that is blown away by a desert wind.

“Say this to them: ‘My eyes flow with tears day and night without stopping because my dear people will suffer massive destruction. It will be a very serious blow.’ ”

The storm of the Lord will come with his anger. Like a windstorm, it will swirl down on the heads of the wicked.

It will be a stronger wind than that. It will come from me. Now, I will pass sentence on them.”

The cry from my dear people comes from a distant land: “Isn’t the Lord in Zion? Isn’t Zion’s king still there?” They make me furious with their idols, with their foreign gods.

My eyes are worn out with tears. My stomach is churning. My heart is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of my people. Little children and infants faint in the city streets.

“Streams of tears run down from my eyes over the ruin of my dear people.

The hands of loving mothers cooked their own children. The children were used for food by my people when they were being destroyed ⌞by a blockade⌟.

Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young, but the women of my people are as cruel as wild ostriches.

The punishment for my people’s wickedness has been more severe than the punishment for the sins of Sodom. Sodom was destroyed instantly, without one human hand touching it.

It might be planted again, but will it live and grow? It will wither completely when the east wind blows on it. It will certainly wither in the garden where it is growing.’ ”

But in anger it was uprooted and thrown to the ground. The east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong branches broke off. They withered and were burned.

The people of Ephraim have become important among their relatives. However, the Lord’s scorching wind will come from the east. It will blow out of the desert. Then their springs will run dry, and their wells will dry up. The wind will destroy every precious thing in their storehouses.

That is why they will be like fog in the morning and like morning dew that disappears quickly. They will be like straw blown away from threshing floors. They will be like smoke rising from chimneys.

The wind will carry them away in its wings, and their sacrifices will bring them shame.

They will move quickly and pass through like the wind. So they will be guilty, because their own strength is their god.

I am going to send the Babylonians, that fierce and reckless nation. They will march throughout the earth to take possession of lands that don’t belong to them.
