‘Jeremiah, your cousin Hanamel, son of Shallum, is going to come to you and say, “Buy my field that is in Anathoth, because as the closest relative it is your responsibility to buy it.” ’

However, the Lord had told Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife is coming to ask you about her son who is sick. When she comes, she will pretend to be someone else.” He also told Ahijah what to say to her.

⌞These are⌟ the words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah. He was one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

This is what the Lord says: The people of Anathoth want to kill you. They say, “Don’t prophesy in the name of the Lord, or we’ll kill you.”

Jeremiah said, “The Lord spoke his word to me. He said,

“Then, as the Lord had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the courtyard of the prison. He said to me, ‘Please buy my field that is in Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. It is your responsibility to purchase it, because the rights of the closest relative belong to you. Buy it for yourself.’ Then I knew that the Lord had spoken to me.

“Land must never be sold permanently, because the land is mine. To me you are strangers without permanent homes.

People must always have the right to buy their property back.

If your brother becomes poor and sells some of his property, then the one who can assume responsibility, his nearest relative, must buy back what he sold.

But a field that belongs to their cities must not be sold, because it is their permanent property.

His uncle, his cousin, or some other relative could also buy him back. If he becomes rich, he could buy his own freedom.

“Tell the Israelites to give the Levites some cities from their own property. They must also give the Levites the pastureland around those cities.
