“I have certainly heard Ephraim mourn and say, ‘You disciplined me, and I was disciplined. I was like a young, untrained calf. Turn me, and I will be turned, because you are the Lord my God.

“Blessed is the person whom God corrects. That person should not despise discipline from the Almighty.

The Lord disciplined me severely, but he did not allow me to be killed.

Before you made me suffer, I used to wander off, but now I hold on to your word.

I know that your regulations are fair, O Lord, and that you were right to make me suffer.

My future is in your hands. Rescue me from my enemies, from those who persecute me.

Don’t be stubborn like a horse or mule. ⌞They need⌟ a bit and bridle in their mouth to restrain them, or they will not come near you.”

O Lord, blessed is the person whom you discipline and instruct from your teachings.

A whip is for the horse, a bridle is for the donkey, and a rod is for the backs of fools.

A person who will not bend after many warnings will suddenly be broken beyond repair.

Do not reject the discipline of the Lord, my son, and do not resent his warning,

“Why do you still want to be beaten? Why do you continue to rebel? Your whole head is infected. Your whole heart is failing.

Your children have fainted. They lie sleeping at every street corner. They are like an antelope caught in a net. They experience the anger of the Lord, the fury of your God.

He was abused and punished, but he didn’t open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. He was like a sheep that is silent when its wool is cut off. He didn’t open his mouth.

You are our Father. Even though Abraham doesn’t know us and Israel doesn’t pay attention to us, O Lord, you are our Father. Your name is our Defender From Everlasting.

But the people have not returned to the one who struck them, nor have they sought the Lord of Armies.

Heal me, O Lord, and I will be healed. Rescue me, and I will be rescued. You are the one I praise.

“I have punished your children without results. They didn’t respond to correction. You killed my prophets like a raging lion.

We must lie down in our shame and be covered by our disgrace. Ever since we were young, we and our ancestors have sinned against the Lord our God. We haven’t obeyed the Lord our God.

There will be a day when watchmen on the mountains of Ephraim will call out this message: ‘Arise! Let’s go to Zion, to the Lord our God.’ ”

They will cry as they return. They will pray as I bring them back. I will lead them beside streams on a level path where they will not stumble. I will be a Father to Israel, and Ephraim will be my firstborn.

Lord, your eyes look for the truth. You strike these people, but they don’t feel it. You crush them, but they refuse to be corrected. They are more stubborn than rocks. They refuse to turn back.

O Lord, bring us back to you, and we’ll come back. Give us back the life we had long ago,

There you will remember the way you lived and everything you did to dishonor yourselves. You will be disgusted by every wrong thing that you did.

This entire disaster happened to us, exactly as it was written in Moses’ Teachings. Lord our God, we never tried to gain your favor by turning from our wrongs and dedicating ourselves to your truth.

“Ephraim is like a trained calf that loves to thresh  grain. I will put a yoke  on its beautiful neck. I will harness Ephraim. Judah must plow. Jacob must break up the ground.

“The people of Israel are as stubborn as a bull. How can the Lord feed them like lambs in an open pasture?

I will go back to my place until they admit that they are guilty. Then they will search for me. In their distress they will eagerly look for me.”

God saw what they did. He saw that they turned from their wicked ways. So God reconsidered his threat to destroy them, and he didn’t do it.

It obeys no one. It does not accept correction. It does not trust the Lord. It does not draw close to its God.

Then those who feared the Lord spoke to one another, and the Lord paid attention and listened. A book was written in his presence to be a reminder to those who feared the Lord and respected his name.

He will change parents’ attitudes toward their children and children’s attitudes toward their parents. If not, I will come and reclaim my land by destroying you.”

“On the west side the armies led by Ephraim will camp under their flag. The leader for the people of Ephraim is Elishama, son of Ammihud.

He will go ahead of the Lord with the spirit and power that Elijah had. He will change parents’ attitudes toward their children. He will change disobedient people so that they will accept the wisdom of those who have God’s approval. In this way he will prepare the people for their Lord.”

“So he went at once to his father. While he was still at a distance, his father saw him and felt sorry for him. He ran to his son, put his arms around him, and kissed him.

God has brought his servant back to life and has sent him to you first. God did this to bless you by turning every one of you from your evil ways.”

It is God who produces in you the desires and actions that please him.

You have forgotten the encouraging words that God speaks to you as his children: “My child, pay attention when the Lord disciplines you. Don’t give up when he corrects you.

I correct and discipline everyone I love. Take this seriously, and change the way you think and act.
