That is why everyone who devours you will be devoured, and all your enemies will be taken away as captives. Those who looted you will be looted. Those who stole from you in war will have things stolen from them.

Put to shame all those who hate Zion. Force them to retreat.

But if you will listen to him and do everything I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an opponent to your opponents.

People will take them and bring them to their own place. The nation of Israel will possess nations as male and female slaves in the Lord’s land. They will take their captors captive and rule their oppressors.

“This is what I, the Lord, say about all my evil neighbors who take the inheritance that I gave my people Israel: I am going to uproot those neighbors from their lands. I will also uproot the people of Judah from among them.

Israel was set apart for the Lord. It was the best part of the harvest. All who devoured it became guilty, and disaster struck them,’ ” declares the Lord.

“When the 70 years are over, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation for their crimes, declares the Lord. I will turn Babylon into a permanent wasteland.

Why do you cry about your wound, your injury that can’t be cured? I’ve done this to you. You are very wicked, and you have many sins.

Listen! Fugitives and refugees from Babylon are coming to Zion to tell about the vengeance of the Lord our God, the vengeance for his temple.

The snorting of horses can be heard from Dan. The neighing of stallions makes the whole land tremble. They are coming to devour the land and everything in it, the city and its people.

“All my enemies have heard that I am groaning. No one offers me comfort. All my enemies have heard about my disaster. They are happy that you did it. You have allowed the day to come, the one that you had announced. Let my enemies be like me now.

Recall all of their wickedness. Then deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my rebellious acts. I groan so much and feel so sick at heart.”

Then all those living in Egypt will know that I am the Lord. Egypt, you have become like a ⌞broken⌟ walking stick to the nation of Israel.

“ ‘You have always been an enemy of Israel. You deserted the people of Israel in battle when they were in trouble during their final punishment.

I will sell your sons and daughters to the people of Judah. They will sell them to the people of Sheba, a nation that is far away.” The Lord has spoken.

But now many nations gather against you. They say, “Let’s dishonor Zion and gloat over it.”

Then my enemies will see this, and they will be covered with shame, because they asked me, “Where is the Lord your God?” Now I look at them. They are trampled like mud in the streets.

He will put an end to Nineveh with a devastating flood. He will pursue his enemies with darkness.

You are filled with disgrace rather than glory. Drink! Yes you! And expose yourself as godless. The cup in the Lord’s right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

“I have heard the insults from Moab and the mockery from Ammon. They insulted my people and bragged about their territory.

The angel who was speaking with me said, “Announce: This is what the Lord of Armies says: I’m very jealous about Jerusalem and Zion,

and I’m very angry with the nations who think they are at ease. I was only a little angry, but they made things worse.

“I’m going to make Jerusalem like a cup ⌞of wine⌟ that makes all the surrounding people stagger. They will attack Judah along with Jerusalem.

I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem for battle. The city will be captured, the houses looted, and the women raped. Half of the people in the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people won’t be taken from the city.

The Lord will claim Judah as his own in the holy land and will again choose Jerusalem.

This is what the Lord of Armies says: Afterwards, the Glory sent me to the nations who looted you. Whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye.

Then the Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies, those who hate you and persecute you.

If anyone is taken prisoner, he must go to prison. If anyone is killed with a sword, with a sword he must be killed. In this situation God’s holy people need endurance and confidence.

When the Israelites came back from their pursuit of the Philistines, they looted all the goods in the Philistine camp.
