You change your mind so easily. You will be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.

At that time King Ahaz sent for help from the kings of Assyria.

Then the people will be shattered and ashamed because Sudan was their hope and Egypt was their beauty.

You won’t gain anything by going to Egypt to drink water from the Nile River. You won’t gain anything by going to Assyria to drink water from the Euphrates River.

“How can you say that you haven’t dishonored yourselves and haven’t followed other gods—the Baals? Look how you’ve behaved in the valley. Acknowledge what you’ve done. You are like a young camel that swiftly runs here and there.

You carefully planned ways to look for love. You taught your ways to wicked women.

“Go to Lebanon and cry! Raise your voice in Bashan! Cry out from Abarim, because all your lovers are defeated.”

The wind will blow away all your shepherds, and your lovers will go into captivity. Then you will be ashamed and disgraced by all your wickedness.

How long will you wander around, you unfaithful people? The Lord will create something new on earth: A woman will protect a man.

“This is what the Lord God of Israel says: Say this to the king of Judah, who sent you to get advice from me: ‘Pharaoh’s army has come out to help you. But it will go back to Egypt, its own land.

The nations have heard of your shame; your cry fills the earth. One warrior will stumble over another, and both will fall together.”

“We are still straining our eyes, trying in vain to find help. We waited and waited for a nation that didn’t save us.

We had to beg Egypt and Assyria for food.

“ ‘You had sex with the Assyrians because you weren’t satisfied. You still weren’t satisfied.

When Israel grabbed you, you splintered and tore up their shoulders. When they leaned on you, you broke, and they wrenched their backs.

The thing itself will be carried to Assyria as a present to the great king. Ephraim will be disgraced. Israel will be ashamed because of its plans.

The people of Ephraim try to catch the wind and try to chase the east wind all day. They are very violent and destructive. They make treaties with Assyria and take olive oil to Egypt.

Assyria cannot save us. We won’t ride on horses anymore. We will never again say that the things our hands have made are our gods. You love orphans.”

“When Ephraim saw that he was sick and when Judah saw his own wounds, Ephraim went to Assyria to ask the great king for help. But the king couldn’t cure them or heal their wounds.

Ephraim, you are like a silly, senseless dove. You call for Egypt and run to Assyria for help.
