Jeremiah 14:3

God's Word

Important people send their assistants out for water. They go to the cisterns, but they don’t find any water. They come back with their containers empty. They cover their heads, because they are ashamed and disgraced.

David cried as he went up the Mount of Olives. He covered his head and walked barefoot. And all of the troops with him covered their heads and cried as they went.

The king covered his face and cried loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”

But after some time the stream dried up because no rain had fallen in the land.

Don’t listen to Hezekiah, because this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me! Come out and give yourselves up to me! Everyone will eat from his own grapevine and fig tree and drink from his own cistern.

After that, Mordecai returned to the king’s gate, but Haman hurried home. He was in despair and covered his head.

They are ashamed because they relied on the streams. Arriving there, they are disappointed.

Let those who accuse me wear disgrace as though it were clothing. Let them be wrapped in their shame as though it were a robe.

Let all those who seek to end my life be confused and put to shame. Let those who want my downfall be turned back and disgraced.

The ground is cracked because there has been no rain in the land. The farmers are disappointed. They cover their heads.

Why is my pain unending and my wound incurable, refusing to heal? Will you disappoint me like a stream that dries up in summertime?

“My people have done two things wrong. They have abandoned me, the fountain of life-giving water. They have also dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that can’t hold water.

You will also leave this place with your hands over your head, because the Lord has rejected those you trust. You will not be helped by them.”

But the Lord is on my side like a terrifying warrior. That is why those who persecute me will stumble. They can’t win. They will be very ashamed that they can’t succeed. Their eternal shame will not be forgotten.

So the rain has been withheld, and there have been no spring showers. Yet, you have the shameless look of a prostitute, and you refuse to blush.

The tongues of nursing infants stick to the roofs of their mouths because of their thirst. Little children beg for bread, but no one will break off a piece for them.

If she refuses, I will strip her. I will leave her as naked as the day she was born. I will turn her into a dry and barren land, and she will die of thirst.

Even wild animals long for you. Streams run dry. Fire has burned up the open pastures.

I stopped the rain from falling three months before the harvest. I sent rain on one city and not on another. One field had rain. Another field had none and dried up.

So people from two or three cities staggered as they walked to another city in order to get a drink of water. But they couldn’t get enough. And you still didn’t return to me, declares the Lord.

If any of the families on the earth won’t go to Jerusalem to worship the king, the Lord of Armies, then rain won’t fall on them.
