My people planted wheat, but they harvested thorns. They worked until they became sick, but they gained nothing by it. They were disappointed by their harvests because of the burning anger of the Lord.

You planted a lot, but you harvested little. You eat, but you’re never full. You drink, but you’re still thirsty. You wear clothing, but you never have enough to keep you warm. You spend money as fast as you earn it.

You will plant, but you won’t harvest. You will crush olives, but you won’t rub the oil on your skin. You will make new wine, but you won’t drink it.

You will plant many crops in your fields, but harvest little because locusts will destroy your crops.

Why do you spend money on what cannot nourish you and your wages on what does not satisfy you? Listen carefully to me: Eat what is good, and enjoy the best foods.

then this is what I will do to you: I will terrorize you with disease and fever. You will suffer from eye problems and depression. You will plant your crops and get nothing because your enemies will eat them.

Isn’t it from the Lord of Armies that people grow tired only to feed the flames and nations exhaust themselves for nothing?

I see that the fertile land has become a desert, and all its cities are torn down because of the Lord and his burning anger.

What did you gain by doing those things? You’re ashamed of what you used to do because it ended in death.

You will work hard for nothing because your land will produce no crops and the trees will produce no fruit.

Everyone cheats his neighbor. No one speaks the truth. My people train their tongues to speak lies. They wear themselves out doing wrong.

I, the Lord, search minds and test hearts. I will reward each person for what he has done. I will reward him for the results of his actions.

He let swords kill his people. He was furious with those who belonged to him.

“The people of Israel plant the wind, but they harvest a storm. A field of grain that doesn’t ripen will never produce any grain. Even if it did produce grain, foreigners would eat it all.

“You expected a lot, but you received a little. When you bring something home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the Lord of Armies. “It’s because my house lies in ruins while each of you is busy working on your own house.
