Jeremiah 11:21

God's Word

This is what the Lord says: The people of Anathoth want to kill you. They say, “Don’t prophesy in the name of the Lord, or we’ll kill you.”

They say to the seers, ‘Don’t see ⌞the future⌟.’ They say to those who have visions, ‘Don’t have visions that tell us what is right. Tell us what we want to hear. See illusions.

⌞These are⌟ the words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah. He was one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin.

They will fight you, but they will not defeat you. I am with you, and I will rescue you,” declares the Lord.

I have heard many ⌞people⌟ whispering, “Terror is everywhere! Report him! Let’s report him!” All my closest friends are waiting to see me stumble. They say, “Maybe he will be tricked. Then we can overpower him and take revenge on him.”

But as soon as Jeremiah finished saying everything that the Lord had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets, and all the people grabbed him and said, “You must die!

‘Jeremiah, your cousin Hanamel, son of Shallum, is going to come to you and say, “Buy my field that is in Anathoth, because as the closest relative it is your responsibility to buy it.” ’

I will hand them over to their enemies who want to kill them, and their corpses will be food for birds and wild animals.

You made the Nazirites drink wine. You commanded the prophets to stop prophesying.

A son treats his father with contempt. A daughter rebels against her mother. A daughter-in-law rebels against her mother-in-law. People’s enemies are the members of their own families.

“Brother will hand over brother to death; a father will hand over his child. Children will rebel against their parents and kill them.

The workers took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned a third to death.

The rest grabbed the king’s servants, mistreated them, and then killed them.

Then Jesus added, “I can guarantee this truth: A prophet isn’t accepted in his hometown.
