You will break the yoke  that burdens them, the bar that is across their shoulders, and the stick used by their oppressor, as ⌞you did in the battle against⌟ Midian.

You will use your sword to live, and you will serve your brother. But eventually you will gain your freedom and break his yoke  off your neck.”

A wicked ruler will not be allowed to govern the land set aside for righteous people. That is why righteous people do not use their power to do wrong.

“I removed the burden from his shoulder. His hands were freed from the basket.

That is why the Almighty Lord of Armies will send a degenerative disease against brave men. A flame will be turned into a raging fire under his power.

“How horrible it will be for Assyria! It is the rod of my anger. My fury is the staff in the Assyrians’ hands.

I’ll crush Assyria on my land. I’ll trample it underfoot on my mountains. Then its yoke  will be removed from my people, and its burden will be removed from their shoulders.”

Let the fugitives from Moab stay with you a while. Be their refuge from the destroyer. Ruthless people will come to an end. The destruction will end. The one who tramples others will be gone.

I was angry with my people. I dishonored those who belong to me. I put them under your control. You showed them no mercy. You placed a heavy burden on old people.

I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh, and they will become drunk on their own blood as though it were new wine. Then all humanity will know that I am the Lord, who saves you, the Mighty One of Jacob, who reclaims you.

Why have you forgotten the Lord, your Creator? He stretched out the heavens and laid the foundations of the earth. Why should you live in constant fear of the fury of those who oppress you, of those who are ready to destroy you? Where is the fury of those who oppress you?

Shake the dust from yourselves. Get up, captive Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains around your neck, captive people of Zion.

You will be established in righteousness. You will be far from oppression, so you will not be afraid. You will be far from destruction, so it won’t come near you.

Every warrior’s boot marching to the sound of battle and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel in the fire.

“On that day,” declares the Lord of Armies, “I will break the yokes  off your necks and tear off your ropes. Foreigners will no longer make you serve them.

Mourn over it, all of its neighbors and everyone who knows its fame. Say, ‘Look at the strong staff, the beautiful rod, that is broken!’

I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt so that you are no longer slaves of the Egyptians. I have broken their power over you and made you live as a free people.

But now I will break Nineveh’s yoke  off of you and tear its chains from you.
