Israel, your arrogance testifies against you, but even after all this, you don’t turn to the Lord your God or look to him for help.

Lord, your eyes look for the truth. You strike these people, but they don’t feel it. You crush them, but they refuse to be corrected. They are more stubborn than rocks. They refuse to turn back.

How horrible it will be for those who go to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who depend on many chariots, who depend on very strong war horses. They don’t look to the Holy One of Israel. They don’t seek the Lord.

“Why do you still want to be beaten? Why do you continue to rebel? Your whole head is infected. Your whole heart is failing.

They don’t return to the Most High. They are like a defective bow. Their officials will die in battle because they curse. The people in Egypt will ridicule them for this.

I will go back to my place until they admit that they are guilty. Then they will search for me. In their distress they will eagerly look for me.”

I tried to clean you of your filthy lust, but you wouldn’t clean yourself from your filth. You will never be clean until I unleash my fury on you.

I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. They are plans for peace and not disaster, plans to give you a future filled with hope.

I was angry because of their sinful greed, so I punished them, hid ⌞from them⌟, and remained angry. But they continued to be sinful.

O Lord, your power is visible, but they do not see it. They will see how devoted your people are, and they will be put to shame. Your burning anger will destroy your enemies.

But those who have godless hearts remain angry. They don’t even call for help when he chains them up.

When he had this trouble, King Ahaz became more unfaithful to the Lord.

But if you look for the Lord your God when you are among those nations, you will find him whenever you search for him with all your heart and with all your soul.

“I will separate them with a winnowing  shovel at the city gates. I will make them childless. I will destroy my people because they will not change their ways.

“Son of man, tell the city, ‘You are an unclean land that has not had rain during the day of my anger. You have not been made clean.

This entire disaster happened to us, exactly as it was written in Moses’ Teachings. Lord our God, we never tried to gain your favor by turning from our wrongs and dedicating ourselves to your truth.

I left you with nothing to eat in any of your cities. I left you with no food in your entire land. And you still didn’t return to me, declares the Lord.

I sent plagues on you as I did to Egypt. With swords I killed your best young men along with your captured horses. I made the stench from your camps fill your noses. And you still didn’t return to me, declares the Lord.

I will remove those who have turned away from following the Lord and those who no longer seek the Lord or ask him for help.”

“On that day the Lord will hire the king of Assyria from beyond the Euphrates River to be a razor to shave the hair on your head, the hair on your legs, and even your beard.

No one—leaders or followers, important or unimportant— can do anything for Egypt.
