God's Word

I will offer my back to those who whip me and my cheeks to those who pluck hairs out of my beard. I will not turn my face away from those who humiliate me and spit on me.

So I reprimanded those Jews, cursed them, beat some of them, and pulled out their hair. I made them swear by God: “We won’t allow our daughters to marry their sons, and we won’t allow their daughters to marry us or our sons.”

People ridiculed me with their mouths. They slapped my cheeks with contempt. They united against me.

Since they consider me disgusting, they keep their distance from me and don’t hesitate to spit in my face.

They have plowed my back ⌞like farmers plow fields⌟. They made long slashes ⌞like furrows⌟.”

Indeed, for your sake I have endured insults. Humiliation has covered my face.

I have become a stranger to my ⌞own⌟ brothers, a foreigner to my mother’s sons.

He was wounded for our rebellious acts. He was crushed for our sins. He was punished so that we could have peace, and we received healing from his wounds.

He was abused and punished, but he didn’t open his mouth. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. He was like a sheep that is silent when its wool is cut off. He didn’t open his mouth.

They should turn their cheeks to the one who strikes them and take their fill of insults.

Now, gather your troops, you city of troops. We are under attack. Enemies will strike the judge of Israel on the cheek with a stick.

The Lord replied to Moses, “If her own father had spit in her face, wouldn’t she be excluded from the community for seven days? She must be put in isolation outside the camp for seven days. Then she can be brought back.”

Then they spit in his face, hit him with their fists, and some of them slapped him.

Then Pilate freed Barabbas for the people. But he had Jesus whipped and handed over to be crucified.

After they had spit on him, they took the stick and kept hitting him on the head with it.

But I tell you not to oppose an evil person. If someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn your other cheek to him as well.

Some of them began to spit on him. They covered his face and hit him with their fists. They said to him, “Prophesy!” Even the guards took him and slapped him.

They kept hitting him on the head with a stick, spitting on him, and kneeling in front of him with false humility.

When Jesus said this, one of the guards standing near Jesus slapped his face and said, “Is that how you answer the chief priest?”

We must focus on Jesus, the source and goal of our faith. He saw the joy ahead of him, so he endured death on the cross and ignored the disgrace it brought him. Now he holds the honored position—the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.
