This is what the Lord says: Where are your mother’s divorce papers? Did I give her any to get rid of her? To which of my creditors did I sell you? You were sold because of your sins. I got rid of your mother because of your rebellion.

There was no one else like Ahab. At the urging of his wife, he sold himself to do what the Lord considered evil.

They sacrificed their sons and daughters by burning them alive. They practiced black magic and cast evil spells. They sold themselves by doing what the Lord considered evil, and they made him furious.

One of the wives of a disciple of the prophets called to Elisha, “Sir, my husband is dead! You know how he feared the Lord. Now a creditor has come to take my two children as slaves.”

We have the same flesh and blood as our relatives. Our children are just like theirs. Yet, we have to force our sons and daughters to become slaves. Some of our daughters have already become slaves. But we can’t do anything else when our fields and vineyards belong to others.”

You see, we—my people and I—have been sold so that we can be wiped out, killed, and destroyed. If our men and women had only been sold as slaves, I would have kept silent because the enemy is not worth troubling you about, Your Majesty.”

You sell your people for almost nothing, and at that price you have gained nothing.

“Whenever a man sells his daughter into slavery, she will not go free the way male slaves do.

Rebels and sinners will be crushed at the same time, and those who abandon the Lord will come to an end.

He punished Israel by sending it away. He removed it with a fierce blast from the east winds.

Your first ancestor sinned, and your priests rebelled against me.

Remember this, and take courage. Recall your rebellious acts.

This is what the Lord says: You were sold, but no price was paid. You will be bought back, but without money.

“The Lord has called you as if you were a wife who was abandoned and in grief, a wife who married young and was rejected,” says your God.

“I abandoned you for one brief moment, but I will bring you back with unlimited compassion.

Cry aloud! Don’t hold back! Raise your voice like a ram’s horn. Tell my people about their rebellion and the descendants of Jacob about their sins.

We’ve all become unclean, and all our righteous acts are like permanently stained rags. All of us shrivel like leaves, and our sins carry us away like the wind.

A saying: If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, her first husband shouldn’t go back to her again. The land would become thoroughly polluted. “You have acted like a prostitute who has many lovers. And now you want to come back to me!” declares the Lord.

Judah saw that I sent unfaithful Israel away because of her adultery and that I gave Israel her divorce papers. But treacherous Judah, her sister, wasn’t afraid. She also acted like a prostitute.

“You brought this on yourself. This is your punishment. It is bitter. It breaks your heart.”

During the day you stumble, and during the night the prophets stumble with you. So I will destroy your mother, ⌞the nation of Israel⌟.

“If an Israelite becomes poor and sells himself to you, don’t work him like a slave.

Because he could not pay off the debt, the master ordered him, his wife, his children, and all that he had to be sold to pay off the account.

How could one person chase a thousand or two people make ten thousand flee? Their rock used these people to defeat them and the Lord gave them no help.
